The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) regulates the release of seed in Canada. In 1996, the CFIA authorized the first crop expressing a novel insecticidal protein for environmental release. Since then, the CFIA has authorized approximately 40 plants with novel insecticidal traits. A science-based environmental safety assessment is required to support each authorization decision. By completing these assessments, regulators have gained familiarity and experience assessing the safety of plant-expressed insecticidal proteins. This presentation will discuss the types of information used to support product environmental safety, focusing on pesticidal pore forming proteins. For pesticidal proteins, assessing the potential impact on non-target organisms and biodiversity are essential considerations.
