Giuseppina Mariano
I have received my Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences at the Unversità degli Studi di Napoli “Federico II” (Italy) in 2012. In 2014 I received my Master’s Degree in Molecular Biology at the Unversità degli Studi di Napoli “Federico II” (Italy) working on a project investigating the GPL biosynthesis in Mycobacterium smegmatis.
During my PhD and postdoctoral work in the Coulthurst lab at the University of Dundee I investigated the Type VI Secretion System (T6SS), with a particular focus on the characterisation of the mode of action of T6SS-delivered anti-bacterial effectors. Furthermore, my research also focused on determining the physiological processes of prey cells that are required for the full toxicity of T6SS anti-bacterial effectors.
In 2019 I moved to Dr. Julien Bergeron’s lab, where I have studied the molecular basis of the assembly of the flagellar basal body.
I am currently based at Newcastle University, where I hold a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowship, in Prof. Tracy Palmer lab. My current work is focused on understanding bacteria-bacteriophage interactions and investigation of bacterial defence mechanisms against bacteriophage predation.
