David Heckel
David G. Heckel is currently Emeritus Director at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany. He received the B.A. in Biology and Mathematics from the University of Rochester in 1975 and the Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Stanford University in 1980. After faculty positions at Clemson University and the University of Melbourne, he joined the Institute in Jena as Founding Director of the Department of Entomology in 2003. His research interests include insect-plant interactions, comparisons of hostplant generalists and specialists, molecular genetics of insecticide resistance, genetic variation in lepidopteran sex pheromone systems, lepidopteran genomics, plant-mediated RNA interference for pest control, insect resistance to viruses, and insect mechanisms of resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis toxins.
